So.... What's in your pancake?
Tuesday is Pancake Day which means many of you will be going flippin' crazy in the kitchen. What we want to know about is the bizarre fillings you'll be putting in your pancakes this year.
Do you go for sweet or savoury?
Does ice cream find its way into your pancake?
What's the strangest combo you've ever tried?
Here comes the history bit:
Pancake Day (or Shrove Tuesday) is the last day before Lent. Lent is a time of giving things up.
So Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge and to use ingredients which aren't allowed during Lent. Pancakes are perfect because they contain fat, butter and eggs which were forbidden during Lent.
Perfect Pancake Recipe
The basic batter is quite simple but getting it right is a skill. This will make between 12-14 English style pancakes.
Ingredients:
- 110g/4oz plain flour, sifted
- pinch of salt
- 2 eggs
- 200ml/7fl oz milk mixed with 75ml/3fl oz water
- 50g/2oz butter
You'll also need:
- Large mixing bowl- Frying pan
- Sieve
- Hand whisk or fork
- Spatula
- if you aren't brave enough to toss!
- Ladel
How is it done?
1. Sift the flour and salt into the mixing bowl from a good high to it get the air to it.
2. Using your finger, make a well in the middle of the flour and break the eggs into it.
3. Using the whisk or fork beat the eggs into the flour picking up any flour stuck around the edges of the bowl.
4. Slowly add the water/ milk mixture to the bowl and beat into a smooth batter.Tip: after the batter is smooth let it stand for about 5 minutes, we find it cooks better by doing this.
5. Heat up the pan under a medium to high heat and add the butter to it.
6. Once the butter has melted pour it into the batter and whisk again.
7. Insure the pan is well greased and then add enough batter to cover the bottom of the pan with a little bit extra for thickness. Tip: use the ladle so you can add this all at once and create an even pancake.
8. Each pancake will take a few seconds to cook and once it lies loosely in the pan flip it onto its uncooked side. You can use the spatula here if you're having difficulty.
9. Let the pancake cook on the other side until it moves loosely in the pan.
10. Slide the pancake out onto a plate and eat!
Bon Appetit.... Selamat makaaaaan !
